Hello and welcome back to my blog! 1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?
The first title displayed is a title slide of the producers of the movie. Then, the main actors name is shown. Later, the title of the movie portrayed before a title slide of each actor is introduced. Next, there's a slide of the supervising editor, and a slide of the person who composed, arranged, performed, and produced the film's music. A slide of the person who designed the production is then shown, before a slide of the director of photography. Further, a slide of who did the screenplay is displayed, and then the directors slide is shown. Finally, a minute and a half sequence tells the history of what occurred before the events of the movie.
2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
The image of the title is prioritized in the opening sequence. This is because the slides of the names of everyone that took part in the production of the film all look the same, every slide has a black background with white text in the same font. Whereas the title of the film is against the same black background, but the text is a dark, blood red to stand out.
3. What connotations do these images carry?
The standard images have neutral connotations, but the title slides color gives off an ominous, suspenseful feeling.
4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
The film uses common dystopian characteristics, such as the eerie music in the background, and the emphasis of the danger in the dystopia. This creates an anticipatory feeling in the viewer.
5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
The film appeals to fans of dystopian productions by subtly illuminating the threat to society. The title of the movie itself, is simply a precedent that shows the movie takes place in a situation that is to be feared. The following sequence, However, the sequence explaining the events that took place before the time the film is set in establishes common characteristics of a dystopia. Fear of the outside world, dehumanization, and persecution appeal to fans of dystopias.
6. How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles,
transitions and editing techniques.
The most common use of technology in this opening sequence is the editing technique of fade in and fade out. This effectively preserves the slow approach to the beginning of the movie, as it carefully creeps up to the opening scenes. This climb does an amazing job of building anticipation in the viewer. The final scene in the opening sequence is an establishing shot of a world in flames, which effectively brings the previously explained events to life, showing the viewer the reality of the severity of the events.
