Title Research: Code 8

Hello and welcome back to my blog!

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

During the opening scene of the film “Code 8” which is set in a dystopian future and was found on the website of “Art of the Title, displayed titles such as the director, the actors involved along with who did the casting as well as what studio produced the film, and the title of the film itself at the end.
2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The images that were prioritized in the opening sequence of Code 8 were of images of old new stories about the percentage of the population that have superpowers transitioning to newer/more violent news coverage about those individuals along with the titles being small thin white letters in order to not take attention away from the images present until we get to the end of the opening sequence which it switches to a pitch black image to show the title of the film in a faded font that is colored bright red.

3. What connotations do these images carry?

The connotations that the images carry are slightly frightening as the images in the opening sequence get more violent and graphic as it progresses.

4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

The way that this film establishes a feeling of the genre from the outset is by showing images of a dystopian world, for instance as other dystopian films normally have a segregated group of individuals that a society fears because they are different. In this film, they are attempting to oppress that percentage of the population that have superpowers because the society and the government are afraid of not being able to control them and have them be more powerful than them.

5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The strategies used in this film to ensure that the film appeals to its target audience is that it uses images and transitions that gradually increase its intensity to provide the suspense and heart-racing moment that a fan of dystopian films tends to look for when watching this genre. In addition, they also had dim/dark lighting to invoke fear/intrigue on the viewer along with multiple sounds talking clashing with each other to maintain the anxiety of the audience. Also, the acting played a huge role in ensuring that the film would appeal to the audience of the dystopian genre as it showed both sides of what’s happening in their society.

6. How has technology been used effectively?

The way that technology was effectively used in the dystopian film “Code 8” was that it applied jump cuts to transition from one scene to the next in an abrupt manner in order to maintain the anxiety levels of the audience high. They also applied the editing technique of montage by placing different scenes together in order to make new ones and cause the desired effect. Regarding camera angles, there were multiple close-up shots in order for the viewer to focus on the expressions of the characters shown.
