Genre Research: Level 16

Hello and welcome back to my blog!

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie?

The elements of dystopian films that we chose to base our final task on were vivid in this film. The main character is a strong female lead, which has become more prevalent in this genre. More importantly, she is driven. The protagonists in dystopias often have a character that starkly contrasts that of those around them. Vivien of level 16 perfectly embodies this role. She struggles to escape an awful society where only she and one other person are aware of the horrors they're living in. The story itself is no different to that of other dystopias. The people are under the threats of immoral scientific advancement with no escape or hope, unless one person steps up against the system. This film is action packed as well, not to mention quite emotional. The setting is very conventional, from the start to the end of the film. The lighting is always dim, in order to create an uneasy and gloomy mood. The sound in the film, however really helped show the audience what was happening. Because it was so dark at times, the audience had to rely on the ominous music playing or the frantic footsteps of the trapped girls as hints.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?

We thoroughly enjoyed the plot the most out of this movie. Yes, it had the same elements and conventions of other dystopias, but it was unique in its pacing. The worldbuilding in this film was incredible, each essential detail was revealed carefully with such precision it sometimes shocked the audience. For example, all the confusing events before the final half an hour of the movie led up to the moment Vivien ripped the plastic sheet of her faceless, dead friend. The moment was so carefully prepared for, it fit in the story like the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

In this film there were certain elements that were less appealing than others. For example, some moments of the film could've been clearer. It was hinted at that the evil doctor was indebted to someone more powerful. This was a good idea, and the reasoning behind the trafficking would have been more explicit had they explored this further.

This is Kyra signing off!
