Genre Research: Bird Box
Hello and welcome back to my blog!
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
One of the movies my group and I decided to research was BirdBox. Many of the common elements in dystopian films can be found in this film. For instance, camera angles and movements like aerial shots, close-ups, and zooms were used in this film. For mis en scene, old dark-colored clothing is used alongside dark/dim lighting. The actors wear makeup that makes their faces seem dirty and rough and use very serious acting to convey the seriousness of their situation. The setting starts at a populated town with many people. However, as the film progresses, it moves towards a more secluded area in the woods. The main props used are blindfolds so that the characters can’t see.
BirdBox also employs common editing found in dystopian films. Techniques such as jump cuts shot reverse-shots, and fades are used to add that dark feeling to the film. Sound was also used a lot in this film to convey the tense situation. Non-diegetic sounds like dark and ominous music were used throughout the film's suspenseful parts. Diegetic sounds of dialogue discussed serious and intense topics.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
The elements that I enjoyed were the mis en scene and sounds. The actors' old and battered clothing added to the film's dire and bleakness. The dark lighting added a creepy feeling that send shivers down my spine. When the setting changed to the woods, it added that creepy feeling and made the film watching even more suspenseful. The music that played over the scenes made me sit on the edge of my seat.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
The elements of the movie that I did not like were the constant jump cuts. Throughout the movie, constant cuts from the future to the past were made. This made the movie slightly confusing as I tried to piece together the plot. Besides that, the film was very entertaining and even made me wonder what I would do in a world where I couldn’t see.
This is Kyra signing off!
